As chief executive of PrintWeek’s 2018 Company of the Year, Jon Bailey is a firm believer in the power of print and will do everything he can to ensure buyers understand it’s the most valuable part of the marketing mix.
What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?
A profitable December and a busy high street when the sales start!
What trend (business or technology) do you think 2018 will be remembered for? I think it will be remembered for the realisation by the general commercial print world that automation and the need to produce lots more smaller jobs profitably is not just something the consumer companies need to think about.
What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2019 and why?
Technology continues to advance incredibly quickly and with it comes new opportunities. I think robotics and automation will be biggest opportunity for businesses to radically change the way they look at things and will enable them to get the margin back by doing things differently – which is critical.
What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2019 and why?
I think the biggest threat is if brands continue to buy their corporate print with consumer expectations and consumer behaviour. This is going to put increasing pressure on a lot of the print companies with serious consequences that the buyer just doesn’t understand.
What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2019?
Work together to get our customers to understand that print is the most valuable part of the marketing mix and is not always an off the shelf product.
What was your biggest disappointment in 2018?
Middlesbrough being behind Leeds in Championship!
What was your highlight of 2018?
Winning PrintWeek company of the year because it meant so much to the team (as you could tell from the screams on the night!)
What are your hopes for 2019?
I have big hopes for 2019. Our pipeline is strong and we have a new proposition we are about to go live with so we should go into the year with lots of momentum!
What is your one-word view on Brexit?
Millennium Bug – sorry that’s two!
What was the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Look after the dinner ladies and the cleaners and you will always be OK in life. (You were allowed to say dinner ‘Ladies’ back in 1990!)
What if anything will you do differently in 2019?
I will spend more time recruiting and mentoring new talent.
What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?
Two Cows in a field. One Cow says: “I’m really worried about this Mad Cow ‘BSE’ Disease?” The other cow says: “Doesn’t affect me, I’m a hedgehog!”
What was the best Christmas present you ever received?
Raleigh Grifter.
Are you making any New Year’s resolutions? If so, what?
Lose the middle-aged spread that’s creeping in so you don’t have to keep using an old profile shot in PrintWeek!
